Upstream Planning Tools
The Upstream Planning tools were developed with input from regional non-profit developers of affordable housing. The intent is to provide a quick assessment of the major opportunities during project start-up. For more information on Upstream or to inquire about training on the tools for non-profit developers please see the Upstream page of this website.
Site Selection Tool v 1.0
The Site Selection Tool is designed to improve the sustainability of housing projects by helping development teams select sites that provide the best possible building energy performance, health, and sustainability outcomes for residents and owners. Download Site Selection Tool v 1.0 (Excel 2007).
Site Optimization Tool v 1.0
The Site Optimization Tool is designed for use at the beginning of the conceptual design phase - after a site has been selected, but before work on a site plan and building design begins. The tool highlights issues such as building orientation, massing, shading, and site design that have large consequences for energy efficiency and stormwater control. By bringing these issues to mind, the tool will help guide the development team towards solutions that optimize building performance for a given site. Download Site Optimization Tool v 1.1 (*.pdf).
BasicUtilityCalculator v 1.0
This workbook calculates building performance measures from utility bills (electricity, natural gas, water, and one additional energy source). Based on seasonal use, it estimates irrigation, heating, and cooling energy consumption. Version 1 of the workbook has the capability to process one utility service for each type of utility. It is intended for single-family dwellings, townhomes, and other single-metered dwellings. Outputs include energy intensity, carbon emissions, and water consumption.
