International Building Code 1210
Covers surrounding materials. Specifically for showers:
1210.3 Showers. Shower compartments and walls above bathtubs with installed shower heads shall be finished with a smooth, nonabsorbent surface to a height not less than 70 inches (1178 mm) above the drain inletNote: The Green Communities criterion has several specific conditions not in the code.
