M3d: Use materials from renewable and biodegradable sources
Using materials from renewable resources, especially those that are agriculturally based, prevents the depletion of finite and scarce resources like those in concrete, steel, and petroleum-based materials. Biodegradable materials are typically made from natural and non-toxic materials. At the end of their useful life cycle they can be composted, returning their energy to useful natural cycles rather than taking up space in landfills.
- Specify materials that are made from renewable resources whenever possible
- Specify biodegradable materials when possible and make sure that they are clearly labeled as such during installation
