E1a: Optimize building placement and configuration for energy performance

  • Reduce heating loads and optimize daylighting by elongating the house on an east-west axis
  • Control unwanted solar heat gain through the use of existing and new vegetation, land forms, and buildings to provide shading
  • Analyze prevailing winds to minimize thermal losses during the heating season and to allow for natural ventilation during the cooling season
